Auchengeich mining disaster

September 1959, 47 men died when a faulty fan caught fire. Due to the intense smoke they died a few hundred yards from safety. The mine was eventually flooded to put out the fire; only one man survived. Auchengeich mining disaster remains one of worst UK disasters, and left 41 widows and 76 children without a father.
